The history of the "Duchi " begins in the 14th century, when its ancestor the “Hospitium Magnum” was erected close to the sea, to offer hospitality to tradesmen who arrived at Trieste's harbour.
In the succeeding centuries the building was demolished and rebuilt twice changing each time its name. In 1873, the Fund-owners, Assicurazioni Generali, charged the engineer Eugenio Geiringer with the rebuilding of what became the "Hotel Garni ".
