Located just a few minutes by car from Udine is the charming Villa di Tissano, which dates back to the sixteenth century. This ancient and noble Friulian residence has been renewed and enriched several times throughout the centuries with new rooms halls, furnishings, and gardens, making the Villa the natural and relaxing oasis that it is today.

Without modifying the original structure and its unique 16th century characteristics, a part of the Villa was transformed into a hotel with a restaurant. In this informal and pleasant atmosphere, guests relax, immersed in the noble country life of another era. Obtained from the original buildings such as the ancient tower, the greenhouse, the granaries and the noble apartments, each of the 22 rooms in the Villa is unique, faithful to its rustic origins without forgoing every modern convenience and comfort.

Perhaps the most beautiful "room' of the Villa is its lovely garden. Perfect for a morning or evening stroll, it also provides the ideal setting for an outdoor meal or a party..

The old master kitchen, the typical Osteria (once the attendant's kitchen), as well as the baroque dining room offer settings for a romantic dinner for two as well as for official occasions such as conferences and banquets. Our young chef creates special seasonal menus, prepared according to local traditions. These simple but delicious Friulan meals are best appreciated when they are accompanied by the excellent local Friulan wines.

The central body of the Villa, carefully maintained in its original state, is still the most important and notable part of the whole structure. Guests are offered the opportunity to visit it on our guided tours that will bring to life the rich history of the house and tell of the noble origins the family that once owned the Villa di Tissano. The Villa creates for its guests an authentic Friulan experience with the flavour of bygone days.

The Villa di Tissano is situated at the centre of the town that shares its name. It is found on the main route going from Udine to Palmanova (between Lauzacco and Santo Stefano Udinese).

The complex is in the historic centre of Tissano, in the municipality of Santa Maria La Longa in the province of Udine. Passing through the wrought iron gate you enter a lovely garden in front of the villa. The largest park designed by Fabio Berretta in the first decades of 1900 is to the rear, with lakes, statues, well-curbs and forest trees.

The first part of the complex was built in the 16th century by the noble Agricola family from Udine, who then had considerable extensions made (the volume was more than doubled), redesigning it in Central European style. Later the complex was bought by Counts Strassoldo-Soffumbergo who then granted it to Enrico del Torso at the beginning of 1900, husband of the daughter of Count Beretta.

The complex has a U-layout: the three-storey master house in the centre and the service outbuildings at right angles to it. The main façade is long and divided in three sections. The slightly jutting central section has a moulded tympanum at the top, with the entrance on the ground floor with ashlar cornice with smaller windows to the sides; on the piano nobile there is a central archivolt window and two rectangular side windows with above the noble coat of arms between two small windows in the gables. The two side wings have the same series of openings and stringcourse as the main section; the entrances to these sections are large curved doors. The rear façade is similar to the front, but the central section is not jutting: a triple-lancet window with rounded wrought iron parapet gives light to the hall on the first floor.

The interior layout is that of classic Veneto villas: a central hall with side through rooms and the stairway to the left that leads to the piano nobile, where there is a wonderful library and the party room. It contains some very refined decorations: stuccowork, terrazzo floors, and ceilings with wooden beams. The 19th century kitchen is worth note with the original 16th century fittings, which still conserves the structure with the fogolar (fireplace).
The outhouses are lovely, built on two storeys with large arcades which the carriages used to drive into, and the 19th century tower with belvedere in the left barchessa, and the greenhouse on the right of the complex.

During the First World War it was the headquarters of the military command and then a hospital: the King and Queen of Italy also stayed there.

After the recent restoration work the villa is now a famous hotel and restaurant, with attractive halls for receptions and cultural events.
